Happy World IP Day from JWTH, where every day is IP Day!
This year’s World Intellectual Property Day delves into the world of sports and takes a closer look at how intellectual property (IP) rights – patents, trademarks, designs, copyright and related rights, and even plant variety protection (think turf on sports pitches) – support the global sports ecosystem, a unique landscape the brings together multiple players with overlapping interests.

Legleiter Attends LES Research Triangle Park Chapter Meeting on Public-Private Partnerships
JWTH partner Leon Legleiter recently attended the Licensing Executives Society (LES) Research Triangle Park Chapter meeting. The topic, “A New Approach to Public Private Partnerships to Solve Challenging Societal Issues”, was presented by Mary Napier and Brian Johns. Specifically, Ms. Napier and Mr. Johns discussed the public-private partnership between UNC-Chapel Hill and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in 2015 with the sole goal of finding a cure for HIV. The partnership resulted in the formation of the UNC HIV Cure Center. In 2018, GSK’s HIV Discovery Performance Unit merged with the ViiV Healthcare Discovery Unit and ViiV has since assumed the roles and responsibilities handled by GSK. This partnership continues its work in finding a cure for HIV and, in the process, making a lasting societal impact.
Ms. Napier is the Director of Operations for the HIV Cure Center at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Mr. Johns is the VP of External Discovery Sciences at ViiV Healthcare.
JWTH is a proud Annual Sponsor of the LES Research Triangle Park Chapter.
Gov. Roy Cooper Proclaims “North Carolina Paralegal Day”
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed March 22nd as “North Carolina Paralegal Day”. This is well-deserved recognition for all of the hard-working and dedicated paralegal professionals across the State. As the saying goes, “behind every successful attorney, is a strong and effective paralegal”. This is so true.
At JWTH, we are honored to have some of the finest intellectual property paralegals out there. The level of skill and expertise they possess is amazing enough, but it is their level of dedication in supporting our attorneys and working to help clients achieve their goals and objectives, that puts them in a whole other class of professionals. We work with clients all across the globe, so this is not always a 9-5 job. The stakes are high and the pressure can be intense, but our paralegals work doggedly to help our attorneys to consistently put out high-quality work, day or night, weekday or weekend, whenever the need arises. They take great pride in what they do and it shows. Their high level of integrity and competence is inspiring and we are forever grateful for who they are and all that they do. Our paralegals are a key ingredient in the success we enjoy as a Firm.
Today, and every day, we say “thank you” to all of the wonderful paralegals in North Carolina and beyond.
