2019 AUTM Annual Meeting Is A Wrap!

autm conferenceJenkins, Wilson, Taylor & Hunt recently attended AUTM’s 2019 Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.  AUTM (, or the Association of University Technology Managers, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing research to life by supporting and enhancing the global academic technology transfer profession through education, professional development, partnering and advocacy.  This year’s annual meeting saw record attendance from technology transfer and intellectual property professionals from across the globe.

JWTH partners Arles Taylor, Leon Legleiter and Matt Browning were honored to have the opportunity to attend the meeting this year to further develop relationships with valued clients and colleagues in this important sector.  It is clear that the university technology transfer community is as strong as ever, and JWTH is excited to be a part of it.

Jenkins, Wilson, Taylor & Hunt will be a sponsor of the 2018 Eastern Regional AUTM Meeting (September 13-14) in Baltimore, Maryland. AUTM, short for the Association of University Technology Managers, is a leading non-profit with the mission to educate, promote, and inspire professionals throughout their careers to support the development of academic research that changes the world.


At the Eastern Region AUTM Meeting, discussions will be held about best practices and strategies for industry-academia partnerships that will result in successful product commercialization through company formation and licensing.


This year’s keynote speaker will be Andrew H. Hirshfeld, Esq. of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Hirshfeld holds the position of Commissioner for Patents and is responsible for directing all aspects of patent operations, patent quality management, resources and planning, and much more. We’re extremely excited for the opportunity to hear him speak and we’re looking forward to an insightful meeting!

Leon R. Legleiter Serving as Chair for RTP Chapter of Licensing Executives Society

JWTH’s very own Leon R. Legleiter is currently serving as Chair for the Research Triangle Park Chapter of the Licensing Executives Society. Leon has been serving as Chair since February of this year. For those of you that don’t know about the Licensing Executives Society, they have been the leading association for licensing, intellectual property (IP), technology, and business development professionals for more than 50 years. Their mission is to facilitate global IP commerce through education, networking, standards development, and certification.

The RTP Chapter of LES is one of 35 LES Chapters across the United States and Canada. LES Chapters are typically located in areas that contain a high number of LES Members and licensing professionals. Under the direction of Leon and the Chapter’s leadership, they hold regular meetings where members and outside speakers can discuss topics related to technology transfer and licensing. Dan Atcheson Appointed by NC Bar Association to Serve as Chair

The NC Bar Association has appointed Dan Atcheson as Chair of their Membership Committee for the 2018 – 2019 fiscal year. In this role he will work with committee members and NC Bar Association leadership to drive membership growth and enhance the overall membership experience. All of us at Jenkins, Wilson, Taylor & Hunt are extremely proud of Dan and this accomplishment and we know that he will serve the Committee well.


The Membership Committee is responsible for identifying and recommending strategies to bring on new members, as well as continued memberships, of the NC Bar Association. It is also responsible for reviewing all services offered to members, hosting networking events, and leading efforts to recruit and retain members. JWTH Attends 70th AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo

Leon Legleiter of Jenkins, Wilson, Taylor & Hunt will be attending the AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo this week, hosted in Chicago, IL. This will be the 70th annual meeting held by AACC and the team is excited for the opportunity to attend. In addition to the exposure to new science and technology, we will have the opportunity to network and collaborate with more than 850 companies that will be exhibiting this year.

The Clinical Lab Expo gives exhibiting companies the opportunity to introduce their new technology products. It is estimated that an average of 200 products are presented each year, making the event one of the world’s largest expos for clinical laboratory products and services. Mr. Herring joined Jenkins, Wilson, Taylor & Hunt as an associate in 2008 in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science area of the firm. He earned his B.S. in Computer Science at North Carolina State University, and his J.D. degree at Campbell University. Mr. Herring is admitted to the Bar of North Carolina, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.  

Mr. Herring’s technical background includes experience in the development of Java-based freeware and shareware, as well as database development with JDBC, SQL and Oracle Connectivity. He currently prepares and prosecutes patent applications in the electrical engineering, telecommunications, computer networking, computer storage systems and computer software technology areas.

Dr. Legleiter joined Jenkins, Wilson, Taylor & Hunt as a Technical Specialist in 2007 in the Life Sciences area of the firm.  Prior to joining the firm he earned his B.S. degree in Animal Science, cum laude, at the University of Missouri, his M.S. in Animal Science at the University of Missouri, and his Ph.D. in Nutrition at North Carolina State University.  While working for the firm as a patent agent he earned his J.D., summa cum laude, in the evening law program at North Carolina Central University. He is admitted to the State Bar of North Carolina and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Legleiter specializes in patent and trademark law, and enjoys counseling a wide range of clients from start-ups to universities and global corporations.  He has over a decade of experience in patent preparation and patent prosecution in the life sciences and mechanical technologies, including such areas as medical biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, biochemistry, immunology, and pharmaceuticals, as well as medical devices, imaging technologies, analytical equipment and methodologies, and nanotechnology applications.
